Now is the time on this imploding heart where we all do math and compare answers. Ready?
Ahem:
"Your instructor walks around greenlake in 50 minutes at a rate of 3m.p.h. Assume that this path and the lake are perfect circles. Also assume that the path is 30 feet from the water's edge. Use this information to estimate the area of the lake in ACRES.
A: What is the circumference of the path in Feet?
B: What is the radius of the lake?
C: What is the area of the lake when converted to acres?
Okay now. I think I've got all the measurements in feet, but how the fuck many square feet are in an acre?
An acre has 43560 square feet. And you are getting purty smart, there, smarty skirt.
Posted by: Alisha at May 20, 2003 09:34 AMD'oh, Alisha beat me by a minute. Here's submission #2 for:
1 acre = 43,560 square feet + Sjet's a smarty-skirt.
Whee!
Posted by: Mol at May 20, 2003 09:36 AMnever assume.
Posted by: logan at May 20, 2003 09:42 AMof course, I only say that cause I've forgotten too much math to be able to figure that problem out without a calculator. pff, math.
Posted by: logan at May 20, 2003 09:43 AMOkay, if you think I'm doing this without a calculator, you're totally banana-hats.
A: 13200ft
B: 2070.85ft
C: 309.29sq acres
anybody else? Please? I'm nervous about it.
One billion.
Posted by: Erin at May 20, 2003 10:40 AMThat's about what I got Sonya, plus or minus a few on answer C.
Posted by: UnderwearNinja at May 20, 2003 10:40 AMHm, I came pretty close, but my numbers were just a tad different:
A=13,305.60 ft.
B= 2,089.35 ft.
C= 314.86 acres
Ah, just found my error! I subtracted 60 ft to calculate the radius of the lake, instead of just 30 ft. I am sooo stoopid!
Posted by: THE COMTE at May 20, 2003 10:44 AMBut, my error shouldn't have affected answer A.
I calculated this by the following method:
50 minutes = .84 hours (50/60)
3 mph x .84= 2.52 mi
2.52 mi. x 5,280 ft = 13,305.6 ft.
A= 13,305.6 ft.
Sonya - you're right about A). Will be back after lunch meeting to tell you why.
Posted by: Mol at May 20, 2003 11:26 AMThat's because .84 is not 50/60. That's an estimate using rounding. It may seem like it's not much, but that small difference added up 50 times causes the discrepency you're seeing.
If you actually convert and to the problem like this:
[50 min * (3miles/60minutes)] * 5280 feet =
reduce reuse recycle
(15 * 5280) / 6 = 13200
And out of boredom, here's the math drawn out so you don't have to read typed math!

Thanks, UN!
Posted by: THE COMTE at May 20, 2003 11:56 AMOK, Sjettypants, I got almost what you got:
A) 13,200 feet
B) 2071.91 feet
C) 309.45 sq. acres
You're taking pi to the fifth decimal place, though, right? That's totally hot. I only went to two.
