Hey, I'm looking to purchase between 1 and 3 totally-fabulous-OG-glam-rock records. Any suggestions?
(all my sad bastard music just fans the unnecessary fire.)
Posted by Sonya at May 7, 2004 03:35 PMGnfR Use Your Illusion 1 AND 2, or if you just want one album, Appetite for Destruction.
Also, Metallica's Justice for All, preferably you can borrow it rather than pay for it, or if you must buy, buy used, cause metallica sucks!
Posted by: UnderwearNinja at May 7, 2004 03:45 PMDon't know what OG means. Glam rock like Ziggy Stardust/Hunky Dory-era Bowie, or newer (late nineties) versions?
Posted by: flamingbanjo at May 7, 2004 04:04 PMYOU DO SO know what OG means, you original gangsta, you.
Ziggy and Bowie, yeah, that's what I mean. (they're the OG's of glam rock, yes?)
Posted by: sonya at May 7, 2004 04:09 PMBoth those albums by Bowie are essential. I like Hunky Dory for its over-the-topness, but if you haven't heard Ziggy Stardust in its entirety, you will totally flip at how good it is. Some other artists involved with Bowie around this period turned out good work: Mott the Hoople shared a guitarist (Mick Ronson) with the Spiders from Mars and some of their stuff is pretty good although I'd say this is strictly a "buy the greatest-hits album kinda band (also, I'm pretty sure that Erin J has a copy of some compilation of the Hoople, so maybe you could, uh, "trade mix-tapes" with her or somethin'... Just make sure you hear "All the Way from Memphis" before you die.)
Also, I don't know if Iggy Pop qualifies as glam, but there are a couple albums of his that you'd probably dig: Lust for Life and the Idiot. Tracks from both of these are combined on an album called Choice Cuts which did a lot of duty in the car tape decks of my youth.
There are some who swear by Marc Bolan and T-Rex, but this is kind of a hit-or-miss affair for me. Again, might be an occasion for buying the greatest hits album.
Hope this helps!
Skidrow, Poison, Warrant
