The Fakers' Club

So. I guess this is it. The year I'm found out.
You know...that feeling like you've been faking your way through everything in life: every job you've had, every accomplishment, every paper you've written...and that one day you're going to be found out?

Well, no, you probably aren't part of the Fakers' Club.

A friend told me that his father was the Vice President of the Bank of New York for many years. Every day he went to work, hoping that they wouldn't find out.

Jimmy the Fish, a fellow faker, wants to put up anonymous signs at the school.
"Fakers' Club Meeting, 6pm, Wednesday".

But of course we wouldn't show up.

I have been a faker my whole life. It is a personality trait that has been ever-present if not dominant. I have been, at various times of my life, Robin Hood, Tom Sawyer, Charlie (of the chocolate factory), John Steed, James Bond, Louis Leaky, a very conflicted Count Dracula, Barbara Jordan, Chuck Yeager, Ted Williams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and most recently, Juan Manuel Fangio.

I don't mean to say that I am a Mittyesque daydreamer--which may or may not be true--
but that at some point I began to attempt to augment my imperfect personality by falsely adding to it the greater traits of others. I will never BE any of those people. But I suppose I am lucky. I was found out long ago. Anyone I allow to get close enough to me will find me out. I Still try to hide it.

But Clark Kent can only keep his secret for so long!

Keira and I used to have our own private Fakers' Club meetings...and they always involved beer.

I'm thinking I'll be raising a glass to fellow Fakers everywhere with each drink from now on.

And I say yes on those signs. Art, baby, that's art. (And maybe I'll but some up at the arts high school, because that'd be sure to frighten something into those kids.)
